watch nowHELL'S GATE, Kenya — Two-and-a-half hours northwest of Nairobi by car, a small group of bitcoin miners set up shop at the site of an extinct volcano near Hell's Gate National Park. "That doesn't happen without the bitcoin miners and us being globally distributed." MacKenzie SigalosWherever the operation, bitcoin mining is a volatile business, because so much of the economics depends on the price of the cryptocurrency. Before getting into bitcoin mining, he and his two co-founders, Philip Walton and Janet Maingi, spent years building internet connectivity infrastructure in rural and urban Africa. Demand from bitcoin miners on these semi-stranded assets is making renewables in Africa economically viable.

Read previewParts of the United States experienced a total solar eclipse on Monday, April 8. Unfortunately, the next opportunity to see a total solar eclipse in the US isn't for a few decades, when two more total solar eclipses will pass over areas of the country. A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the Earth and sun, completely blocking the latter from view. For example, the next total solar eclipse will pass over Greenland, Iceland, Spain, Russia, and part of Portugal on August 12, 2026, per NASA. AdvertisementThe next total solar eclipse in the US is set for 2044.

Parts of the East Coast, particularly the Mid-Atlantic, may get more snow than normal because of that, he said. That means more rain in the South and extra storminess in the late winter, Gottschalk said. El Nino often means “unusual severe weather across the state of Florida because of a strong subtropical jet stream,” he said. He pointed to Washington’s paralyzing 2010 Snowmageddon storm that dumped more than 2 feet on the capital region during an El Nino. The Siberian snow cover, El Nino and other factors “indicate an overall mild winter,” he told The Associated Press.

CNN —As overtourism continues to throttle European cities, one destination has taken a step against cruise ships, restricting access to the port. Barcelona has closed its northern port terminal to cruise traffic, after an agreement with the local authorities to move ships further out of town. Cruise ships must now dock at the Moll d’Adossat pier, which is the furthest from the city center. Manfred Gottschalk/The Image Bank Unreleased/Getty ImagesBarcelona is Europe’s biggest cruise port. In contrast, the city’s population is just over 1.6 million, according to 2023 data by the local authorities.

CNN —Barcelona Femení overcame a 2-0 deficit to defeat Wolfsburg 3-2 in a dramatic Women’s Champions League final and banish its disappointment from last year. The only blemish on Barcelona’s all-conquering record these past few seasons was last year’s Champions League final, as it succumbed to a 3-1 defeat against Lyon, despite otherwise marauding through records and later becoming the first ever football team to win 50 consecutive league games. Saturday’s final against Wolfsburg in Eindhoven, Netherlands was a chance for redemption, but 2-0 down at half time, it seemed that Barcelona would have to wait at least another year to secure a second Women’s Champions League trophy. Legendary forward Alexandra Popp timed her run to perfection as she headed in Pajor’s pass into the box for a record-equaling fourth goal in Women’s Champions League finals. A cyber criminal took hundreds of thousands of dollars from Sen. Jerry Moran's campaign coffers last year, according to a form filed with the Federal Election Commission by the Kansas Republican's campaign. In the filing, the treasurer at Moran For Kansas said post-election reporting revealed the senator's campaign was the victim of a “third-party cyber-criminal” that included a pair of fraudulent transactions. “Cybercriminals targeted the accounting firm employed by Moran For Kansas and money was wired to fraudulent bank accounts,” Moran for Kansas spokesperson Tom Brandt told NBC News. The campaign also consulted with the FEC on how to transparently report the unauthorized expenditures.”The campaign told the FEC in the December filing that $168,184 of the lost funds had been recovered. Main Street could find itself stuck in gridlock next year in terms of advancing pro-business tax objectives. For House Republicans, legislative priorities are likely to include extending business-friendly provisions of The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, passed by the Trump Administration in 2017. Even so, a divided Congress means that major pro-business legislative changes will be difficult to enact. Rather, tax and policy professionals expect House Republicans to focus on a number of positioning moves next year — ones that will establish their pro-business agenda ahead of the 2024 presidential election. "There are a host of provisions in the tax code that businesses would like to see changed or revised," said Rochelle Hodes, a principal in Crowe's Washington National Tax office.
BERLIN, Nov 19 (Reuters) - Former Bundesbank chief Jens Weidmann is to be a candidate to become chairman of Commerzbank's (CBKG.DE) supervisory board after Helmut Gottschalk decided not to stand for a new term in the role, the German bank said on Saturday. It said shareholder representatives of the Presiding and Nomination Committee had responded positively to Gottschalk's recommendation to propose Weidmann for election to the supervisory board at the annual general meeting in May 2023. "It is also intended that he will subsequently be elected the successor of Helmut Gottschalk as chairman," the bank said in a statement. Weidmann, an economist, quit last year as head of the Bundesbank after a decade of fruitless opposition to the European Central Bank's aggressive stimulus policy of sub-zero interest rates and massive government bond purchases. A decade ago, CAR T cell therapy changed the world of cancer treatment, offering a personalized approach to patients with blood cancers like leukemia. A novel approach to CAR T (chimeric antigen receptor T cell) therapy aims to cut down that turnaround time significantly. Instead of reprogramming each patient's cells, researchers are testing the safety of using universal, or "off the shelf," CAR T cells from other patients, preprogrammed to fight cancer. Scientists at University College London in the United Kingdom tested the safety of the experimental approach in six children — mostly toddlers — with advanced leukemia. One particular side effect associated with CAR T therapy is called a cytokine storm, and it can be deadly.
